Do I need an account on every social media platform?

I’m gonna say this and you probably aren’t going to like it – yes, you need an account with every social platform. Now before you freak out, I have some pretty good reasons as to why.

Reason #1 for why you need an account on every social platform

First and foremost, you will need an account on every social media platform simply to claim your handle name. Nothing is worse than having ONE platform having a different name than everything else. Not only is it frustrating for you to have different handle names. But it makes it more difficult for your followers to find you on those platforms.

You will need an account on every social media platform for the simple fact that you need to claim your handle name before someone else does.

This can also be frustrating in cases where you grow in popularity on one platform and decide to move to another. If someone has already taken your handle name, the person who owns that handle could hold onto it as leverage. In this case, they may ask for a large amount of money to relinquish the name. That being said, if there’s a new platform (like Threads!), get your name claimed.

Reason #2

Secondly, you’ll want an account on every platform because different social media accounts become popular at different times. And they also become popular for different types of content.

What content doesn't perform well on one platform could go viral on another social media platform.

What might do well on Instagram, might not do well on TikTok.

And what may not do well on Instagram, may see huge success on YouTube Shorts!

Do not underestimate the power of any platform just because you don’t have the same following across the board. Get your account started on every platform. And then experiment with all of them.

This is not to say you have to post as regularly across ALL platforms. My primary focus is Instagram with my 22,000 followers. But even with my 650 subscribers on YouTube, I see a lot of success with my content there too! I am constantly getting thousands of views on my Shorts. Sometimes my content on YT Shorts outperforms how it did on Instagram. (Seriously, if you aren’t using YouTube Shorts, you are missing out.)

Reason #3

More platforms means more opportunities for brand partnerships.

The more social media accounts you have on other platforms, the more brand opportunities and deals that you could accept.

Although my Instagram is my strongest platform, I still get partnerships on TikTok, YouTube, and even Pinterest. Not many, but a few.

Additionally, some partnerships require your partnership to be a multi-post situation. In this case, they will ask you to post on your main platform as well as another. Simply to get more reach for them across multiple platforms. For this reason, you will need to be on those platforms to apply for and complete those campaigns. Otherwise if you don’t, you will be kicked out of the running to work with that brand.

That being said, you need to get an account on every platform.

Reason #4 for why you need an account on every social platform

Your account for ANY platform can be deleted, deactivated, or banned at the drop of a hat. You’ll want a way to communicate with your audience what happened and direct them accordingly.

This reason in particular is also why if you aren’t already, you need to start a blog. Not only do you have 100% control over the content. But it can’t ever be shut down due to a third-party limitation or app ban. Additionally, I have made way more money from this small blog than I would ever have been able to negotiate for a brand deal. How? Affiliate links, baby! But we will discuss blogs more in depth in a little bit.
