EcoRoots: Your One-Stop Shop for All Things Eco-Friendly!

Part of my 2021 resolutions was to become more eco-friendly. Now, I’m not perfect, but there’s a lot of little things here and there that can really make a huge difference.

My journey towards being more eco-friendly started when I got a job as a tour operator at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Being surrounded by conservation and consistently talking about and learning about sustainable switches realy got me thinking more consciously about what I could to reduce my carbon footprint. Not to mention my sister is actually the queen of sustainablitiy and she gives me a lot of great tips too!

But one of the biggest tips I was able to give her was checking out EcoRoots. This is a classic “score one for Instagram ads” kind of situation. I started following a lot of eco-friendly companies like Dropps (eco-friendly laundry detergent), Juni Essentials (bamboo toothbrushes and dental accessories), and Grove Collective (sustainable cleaning solutions), and lo and behold my ads started reflecting that. You can read more about different sustainable switches here. Also at the time, I was talking more and more about eco-friendly tips that my followers could start doing to reduce the amount of plastic they use in their lifetime. So all in all, the ads did their job – they got me hooked and they brought me to EcoRoots’ Instagram page!

The ad that got me specifically was for their bamboo hairbrush. Since I already had worked with Juni Essentials to bring to light their bamboo toothbrush collection, and had done research into the impact switching to a bamboo product would have on my carbon footprint, I was intrigued! With how many toothbrushes I will go through in a lifetime, and with the fact that you can’t recycle them, I figured the same would be true for the impact of switching from a plastic hairbrush to a bamboo one!

But after browsing their site, I saw just how many items they had – ranging from home products to beauty products! All I know is that once Cody and I actually close on a home, I will be shopping this site frequently for all sorts of products for all over our house.

Here are some of the items that they have that could be great switches for you in your own home:

How to Disney Bound on a Budget

As you know from one of my other Disney Bound blogs, Six Reasons Why You Should NEVER Clear Your Closet Out If You Want To Disney Bound, it is extremely important to never get rid of what’s in your closet because Disney Bounding is a pretty expensive hobby! So how do you make sure you can still keep your Disney Bounds fresh, frequent, and cute but not break the bank?

I won’t drag this out any longer – shopping at thrift stores, on the Poshmark app, and on Shein!

I grew up bouncing from thrift store to thrift store with my mom. The long hours, the disorganized atmosphere, and that weird smell that they all seemed to have all gave me the impression that thrift stores are, in all matters of the word, “icky”.

Years passed, social media grew, and I started to see all these people finding just absolutely adorable Disney finds by shopping at thrift stores! Not to mention, finding pieces that seemed way too new to be found at a thrift store! So last year I took the chance at braving the storm and decided to go back to a thrift store after years of avoiding it and what I found was shocking.

I was preparing myself for the worst – the chaotic aisles, the clothes thrown on the floor, and of course, the old-lady smell. But what I found was a complete 180. Oh. My. Gosh. New floors, actual aisles and sections, everything was color coordinated! AND NO WEIRD SMELL!

Since then, I have frequented thrift stores as my go-to for finding those pieces that make all new Disney Bounds with ease! The bill has always been so cheap and the quality has actually been shockingly good. I guess you can thank fast-fashion for that! Because that fashion sure turns up in thrift stores pretty darn fast!! For those in the San Diego area, my absolute favorite thrift store is Valley Thrift Store. I can’t tell you how many things I have found there, including actual Disney Parks products! Sometimes I shop for Bounds and sometimes I just buy things because they are awesome Disney items.

I think one of the biggest things you need to remember while thrift store shopping is to not go in with one specific idea of what you want or need. It’s good to have direction, but it isn’t a good idea to have one exact thing you want otherwise you will walk out disappointed.

The other big thing I think you need to remember while shopping is to remember that you don’t HAVE to shop! What I mean by that is to remember what you have in your own closet at home! There’s no need to waste money on something you can easily incorporate into your outfit that you already have.

Below I have attached some pictures of my content that would not be possible without thrifting!

Carlos from the Descendants
Olaf from Frozen
Not necessarily a Bound, but a perfect example of finding cool Disney merch!

Now, if you can’t find any thrift store finds that suit you or don’t have ones near you, then I highly recommend getting addicted to Poshmark like I have. Through this site, I was able to find the types of pieces that I wasn’t able to find while shopping and scored an incredible deal on them. An example being this super cute plaid shirt that had the front laced that I wanted to wear for a Dark Side look around Galaxy’s Edge.  I would like to think that the majority of Poshmark listings are pretty much shopping thousands of thrift stores in an online setting. Not to mention, I can make some side money selling the pieces that I have grown out of or don’t have a need for anymore. {If you want to jumpstart your own closet, use my code DONNA_FAABORG when signing up for a new account and you will receive $10 to spend on the app!}

Here’s some examples of pieces I have found on Poshmark:

Yesss from Wreck It Ralph 2
Stormtrooper in Galaxy’s Edge
A general Star Wars Dark Side look

Lastly, Shein is an online store that has a huge library of great finds for Disney Bounds. The prices are usually pretty low and there are pages and pages of pieces to explore. The only downside is that some of the item are pretty hit or miss in terms of fit and quality. I really only shop on Shein for more specific things I am trying to find for my Disney Bounds. Below I have attached some pictures of outfits that were put together solely from Shein: (shop these looks by clicking the picture or following me on LikeToKnow. It)

Slave Jasmine from Aladdin
Rapunzel from Tangled and “Legally Blonde” crossover
Ahsoka Tano from the Clone Wars animated series

Overall I am coming to realize that I never ever, ever should have given away any of my old clothes because I probably got rid of so many great things that I could have used for future Disney Bounds! So as much as your boyfriends or husbands or significant others may beg and plead for you to empty your closet, just let them know that by cleaning it, that just means you have to spend more to create other beautiful outfits. Don’t let them bully you 😉

I hope if you had a similar opinion about thrift stores that this blog will help you give it a second chance to blow you away. Start shopping and get to creating beautiful outfits! And I can’t wait to keep adding to this topic because I have so many new Disney Bounds that I cannot wait for you to see!

Four Products to Use to Be More Eco-Friendly

The Juni Essentials starter kit features a metal toothpaste wringer, a natural toothpaste with recyclable tubing, a bamboo toothbrush travel case, a toothbrush holder, and two bamboo toothbrushes - one with white colored bristles and one with charcoal colored bristles

Bamboo Toothbrush – Juni Essentials

In your lifetime, you will go through 300 toothbrushes. In one year alone, the amount of plastic toothbrushes that are thrown out worldwide could be laid out and wrapped around the Earth four times. What’s worse is that toothbrushes aren’t even recyclable! All that plastic is going into landfills so what can we do instead? Switch to a bamboo toothbrush from Juni Essentials! Bamboo is fully biodegradable and it is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth so it’s easily renewable. Lucky for you, Juni also offers a full line of products to make your dental hygiene top-notch as well as more sustainable. You can use the code DONNA20 to get 20% off of their products to get you started! Click here to shop!

Shade Grown Coffee

This is such an important one to support because it helps to ensure that rainforests aren’t being destroyed to make fields to grow the beans. By not having rainforests and natural environments destroyed for coffee fields, it also ensures that the natural wildlife continues to have a home to live in. Many animals are shoved out of their homes and experience endangerment because of urbanization. Shade grown coffee also does not require chemical fertilizers and because being grown in the shade takes a little bit longer to grown, it actually makes the coffee bean taste better! It’s a win-win to switch! Click here to learn more about shade grown coffee and which brands you can shop!

Save money, save water, save clothes, and save plastic by switching to Dropps Laundry Detergent. This simple switch will help you be more eco-friendly in your everyday life! This picture shows the different sized boxes available for purchase!

Laundry Detergent – Dropps

We are all very aware of how bulky laundry detergent jugs are, and the plastic is so thick! Which is why it’s so upsetting that these are one of the must unrecycled products in our lives! Now you can just as easily start recycling your current jugs (which you definitely should), or you can switch to a product that doesn’t use single-use plastic. Try switching to Dropps! Literally everything about their process is eco-friendly and supports a sustainable laundry life. Click here to check Dropps out online!

Reusable Snack Bags

One family will go through around 500 plastic snack bags per years and, yes, they probably won’t be recycled. Now THAT’S a lot of plastic going into landfills. Buying reusable snack bags will not only limit your plastic use, but it will be cheaper for you long-term not having to continually buy more and more plastic bags! Reusable snack baggies can be found pretty much anywhere – Walmart, Kohl’s, Target, etc. I personally found that the ones at Target had some of the best prints, sizes, and styles. Click here to shop reusable snack bags from Target!
