How to Disney Bound on a Budget

As you know from one of my other Disney Bound blogs, Six Reasons Why You Should NEVER Clear Your Closet Out If You Want To Disney Bound, it is extremely important to never get rid of what’s in your closet because Disney Bounding is a pretty expensive hobby! So how do you make sure you can still keep your Disney Bounds fresh, frequent, and cute but not break the bank?

I won’t drag this out any longer – shopping at thrift stores, on the Poshmark app, and on Shein!

I grew up bouncing from thrift store to thrift store with my mom. The long hours, the disorganized atmosphere, and that weird smell that they all seemed to have all gave me the impression that thrift stores are, in all matters of the word, “icky”.

Years passed, social media grew, and I started to see all these people finding just absolutely adorable Disney finds by shopping at thrift stores! Not to mention, finding pieces that seemed way too new to be found at a thrift store! So last year I took the chance at braving the storm and decided to go back to a thrift store after years of avoiding it and what I found was shocking.

I was preparing myself for the worst – the chaotic aisles, the clothes thrown on the floor, and of course, the old-lady smell. But what I found was a complete 180. Oh. My. Gosh. New floors, actual aisles and sections, everything was color coordinated! AND NO WEIRD SMELL!

Since then, I have frequented thrift stores as my go-to for finding those pieces that make all new Disney Bounds with ease! The bill has always been so cheap and the quality has actually been shockingly good. I guess you can thank fast-fashion for that! Because that fashion sure turns up in thrift stores pretty darn fast!! For those in the San Diego area, my absolute favorite thrift store is Valley Thrift Store. I can’t tell you how many things I have found there, including actual Disney Parks products! Sometimes I shop for Bounds and sometimes I just buy things because they are awesome Disney items.

I think one of the biggest things you need to remember while thrift store shopping is to not go in with one specific idea of what you want or need. It’s good to have direction, but it isn’t a good idea to have one exact thing you want otherwise you will walk out disappointed.

The other big thing I think you need to remember while shopping is to remember that you don’t HAVE to shop! What I mean by that is to remember what you have in your own closet at home! There’s no need to waste money on something you can easily incorporate into your outfit that you already have.

Below I have attached some pictures of my content that would not be possible without thrifting!

Carlos from the Descendants
Olaf from Frozen
Not necessarily a Bound, but a perfect example of finding cool Disney merch!

Now, if you can’t find any thrift store finds that suit you or don’t have ones near you, then I highly recommend getting addicted to Poshmark like I have. Through this site, I was able to find the types of pieces that I wasn’t able to find while shopping and scored an incredible deal on them. An example being this super cute plaid shirt that had the front laced that I wanted to wear for a Dark Side look around Galaxy’s Edge.  I would like to think that the majority of Poshmark listings are pretty much shopping thousands of thrift stores in an online setting. Not to mention, I can make some side money selling the pieces that I have grown out of or don’t have a need for anymore. {If you want to jumpstart your own closet, use my code DONNA_FAABORG when signing up for a new account and you will receive $10 to spend on the app!}

Here’s some examples of pieces I have found on Poshmark:

Yesss from Wreck It Ralph 2
Stormtrooper in Galaxy’s Edge
A general Star Wars Dark Side look

Lastly, Shein is an online store that has a huge library of great finds for Disney Bounds. The prices are usually pretty low and there are pages and pages of pieces to explore. The only downside is that some of the item are pretty hit or miss in terms of fit and quality. I really only shop on Shein for more specific things I am trying to find for my Disney Bounds. Below I have attached some pictures of outfits that were put together solely from Shein: (shop these looks by clicking the picture or following me on LikeToKnow. It)

Slave Jasmine from Aladdin
Rapunzel from Tangled and “Legally Blonde” crossover
Ahsoka Tano from the Clone Wars animated series

Overall I am coming to realize that I never ever, ever should have given away any of my old clothes because I probably got rid of so many great things that I could have used for future Disney Bounds! So as much as your boyfriends or husbands or significant others may beg and plead for you to empty your closet, just let them know that by cleaning it, that just means you have to spend more to create other beautiful outfits. Don’t let them bully you 😉

I hope if you had a similar opinion about thrift stores that this blog will help you give it a second chance to blow you away. Start shopping and get to creating beautiful outfits! And I can’t wait to keep adding to this topic because I have so many new Disney Bounds that I cannot wait for you to see!

Location Ideas for Instagram Photos in North County San Diego

As someone who has spent much of her time at Disneyland taking pictures for my Instagram page, I was left scrambling for a solution when Disneyland closed its gates over a year ago. My biggest fear was that I just wouldn’t be able to make content because now I didn’t have a location to take pictures. What I didn’t know at the time was that this was the biggest blessing in disguise! My content has become much more inspired now that I have left my comfort zone.

Now I want to help you do the same! Whether you are also a content creator in San Diego or you are planning a visit and want to know some hidden gems for pictures, you have come to the right place! What I can promise from this blog is that these spots will NOT be on any lists for “Top 10 Spots to Take Pictures in San Diego”. Definitely not. I’m not a tourist and there are many more places to take pictures – you just have to be a little more open minded about the locations and what you can create there!

Rosemary-Duff Florist // 101 W 2nd Ave, Escondido CA 92025

Just a regular florist shop? WRONG! This florist shop loves being the center of attention when a new holiday comes around! They paint a beautiful mural for most major holidays and it makes for an amazing back drop for some cute, themed pictures!

Old Poway Park // 14134 Midland Rd, Poway CA 92064

This place offers a number of photo spots. Styled like an old town, this offers beautiful architecture, train tracks, old rusted train cars, and a beautiful park that looks amazing during golden hour.

American Flag Wall // 2224 S Escondido Blvd, Escondido CA 92025

Who wants a little ‘Merica? This is a great location to celebrate your own patriotism or the big moments in American history – the Fourth of July, a new election, or just a cute American styled outfit!

Red and Pink Brick Wall // 135 E Felicita Ave, Escondido CA 92025

**Please note that the address displayed is a residential house. This is the closest mapped spot.** The wall is outside of this residential house but it is right up against a public sidewalk with a fence that separates the wall from the residency.

Hill Overlooking Poway // 14117 Tierra Bonita Rd, Poway CA 92064

**Please note that the address displayed is a residential house. This is the closest mapped spot.** The view overlooking Poway is on the opposite side of the road. This is a great spot if you need pictures with mountains in the background or if you want a lot of blue sky in the background.

Palomar McClellan Airport // 2198 Palomar Airport Rd, Carlsbad CA 92008

This small airport provides a great opportunity to have an airport photoshoot in a location that is not that crowded and is very well maintained!

Dried Riverbed // 14326 Tierra Bonita Rd, Poway CA 92064

**Please note that the address displayed is to the Poway Rodeo grounds. This is the closest mapped spot.** The riverbed borders the rodeo grounds and depending on the season can be a great spot for spring pictures or summer pictures! During the winter though, it’s mostly dirt and dead plants.

Keep on exploring because San Diego is full of opportunity and creativity can be found everywhere! And if you don’t live in San Diego, use this blog as inspiration for finding hidden gems where you live too!

the biggest no-no's if you are trying to gain more followers

The Biggest No-No’s of Trying to Gain Followers

You’re trying to draw more eyes to your page and nothing seems to be working. People just don’t seem to be viewing your content and the people who do see it don’t seem to be engaging – how frustrating! You’ve heard inklings about “Instagram pods” and Facebook groups of like-minded Instagrammers who are just trying to get more engagement to their pictures too. You even think that joining a Group Board on Pinterest would only help your audience grow! Not to mention, EVERYONE is doing those big loop giveaways and they seem to be gaining a big following from it.

I am here to tell you – DO NOT DO THAT!!!!

This entire blog is speaking from personal experience. I know the idea of these little games to increase engagement seem harmless and could really only benefit your overall like or comment count. But I promise you that doing this will have long-term damage to your page.

Here is my experience with each one individually:

Instagram Pods

I was a part of a pod when this idea first started out a few years ago. Now at the time, the algorithm was a lot different, but the concept was the same – to bring more engagement to your recent post. But here’s why they don’t work. People are not that responsible. I was always one of those people that would like and comment right away to other people’s posts, but there were a few people in our group that would literally post and run – they would never do the same for the other people in the group. But I explain more of why Pods don’t work in the next section below since the idea of Pods have grown to MASSIVE sizes (far bigger than Instagram can handle in a group DM) and must be moderated via a Facebook Group.

Facebook Engagement Groups

When I first joined this idea, I thought probably what everyone else thought – “this will only be an addition to the engagement that I am already getting, so it’s obviously a win.” But I was very wrong. I will also put a disclaimer here that I don’t know HOW the algorithm knows this cheap trick, but it does. Let’s just agree that the algorithm knows when you’re cheating and acts accordingly.

If you aren’t familiar with these Engagement Groups, it’s essentially a large Instagram Pod. The one I joined on Facebook had over 5,000 active members, had strict rules for participation, and had many different opportunities per day to join games to increase likes, comments, Story Views, Tik Tok views, and more. I felt confident that I would be able to gain more traction on Instagram because there were so many opportunities and the group rules kept people in check to complete the games. The games were things like “Drop your Instagram URL and ‘like’ every URL in the thread”. Since there were many members, there would be probably 50-300 participants depending on the type of game (some of them had caps on the amount of participants).

I looked at the active members and thought that even 50 extra likes on my content would be a win! But having all those people flood a direct URL link to my page hurt my organic reach and engagement. My followers weren’t the ones liking my posts and no one was commenting. After a few weeks in the group, I found that I had to play two or even three of these ‘like’ games to get my ‘like’ count back up to what I was getting organically before I was playing the games! I had to make the hard decision to cut the cord, and boy did I pay the price to leave.

My first week of posting without the help of the Engagement Group sucked. Reach was low and it reflected in the likes. I had to work so much harder to get my like count back to where it was prior to playing those group games because now I was trying to get my posts back on to the feeds of my REAL followers. All I’m saying is that the algorithm knows. It will always be smarter than us. And having those people ‘like’ my content that were not my followers, that were not my target audience, and did not spend more than a split second on my post made the algorithm all read that as “FAKE”.

Pinterest Group Boards

Group Boards are a way for many Pinterest users to Pin their content on to one Board. Usually when you use Pinterest, you are pinning your content on your boards where only you have access to the ability to pin. And you should keep it that way!

Again, I thought joining a Group Board would just be a way to put more of my content in front of more eyes – especially considering these Group Boards had a few thousand followers! At the time, I was averaging 300,000 monthly viewers (and counting!) so I thought by taking this “next” step would skyrocket my content even further. But I had to learn a hard truth.

Being a part of a Group Board is THE WORST. When you post a Pin on to one of your Boards, and your followers react with it or you get organic growth from it being on a Search or Explore page, that’s progress. Every Pin plays a part in your overall average engagement. Now enter Group Boards. You join. You save a Pin to that Group board. And…… nothing.

What happened? Well what happened was that you posted a Pin on a Board that has HEAVY traffic. You posted a Pin and then a few hours later, it was shuffled to a position farther down on the Board that is past people’s short attention spans of scrolling to get to. So inevitably that post shows a few views and 0 engagement. And you know what else? That affects your overall average!!! You posted and that Pin failed.

So if you had posted 5 times that day on your own boards and gotten 1,000 views per Pin, that’s awesome! Now say you posted 5 times – 4 times on your own boards and 1 time on a group board, received 1,000 views on those 4 that you posted on your board and only 3 views on that one Pin that you posted on the Group board, well now your average views per Pin is around 800 views per Pin instead of 1,000. That’s not bad, right? But Pinterest’s own algorithm reads that as a major decrease in your engagement and will adjust accordingly. Keep this trend up, and you’re only going to lose your monthly viewership.

Not to mention that the people who post on Group Boards are trying to do the same thing you are trying to doboost their own engagement. Which means that they post and run! The majority of the people looking at Group Boards are not there to find new content to repin – they are there to post their content in the hopes of someone seeing it and boosting their engagement.

Loop Giveaways

You see them EVERYWHERE! And honestly, many influencers say this is the only way they can gain followers now. I even used to do them! But what I found at the end of the road was a ton of followers but no better engagement. Why? Because they people I gained in followership were not there for me – they were there for the next free thing. They never engaged with my posts and they never supported me or what I did. So more often than not it was embarrassing having 30k+ in followers but having a “like” count that did not reflect that. Not to mention, it’s almost insulting to your ACTUAL, supportive followers that the odds are stacked against them for getting this awesome giveaway package! They are there nonstop for you and some person swoops in and takes the grand prize and they’ve been following you for, what, five minutes?

Ditch the loop giveaways, ditch the fake following, ditch the lack of engagement from that following! Don’t do loop giveaways.

Now I know all these things will continue to entice you with a good time and the prospect of growing your audience. And trust me, I know everyone’s experience is different when it comes to each one of these things. This blog is written from my own personal experience! I am hoping that by giving my insight, you can come to a more educated decision of how you want to take your page. So take what I say with a grain of salt just because what works for me (and more importantly, what doesn’t work for me), might not be the same experience you have!

Four Products to Use to Be More Eco-Friendly

The Juni Essentials starter kit features a metal toothpaste wringer, a natural toothpaste with recyclable tubing, a bamboo toothbrush travel case, a toothbrush holder, and two bamboo toothbrushes - one with white colored bristles and one with charcoal colored bristles

Bamboo Toothbrush – Juni Essentials

In your lifetime, you will go through 300 toothbrushes. In one year alone, the amount of plastic toothbrushes that are thrown out worldwide could be laid out and wrapped around the Earth four times. What’s worse is that toothbrushes aren’t even recyclable! All that plastic is going into landfills so what can we do instead? Switch to a bamboo toothbrush from Juni Essentials! Bamboo is fully biodegradable and it is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth so it’s easily renewable. Lucky for you, Juni also offers a full line of products to make your dental hygiene top-notch as well as more sustainable. You can use the code DONNA20 to get 20% off of their products to get you started! Click here to shop!

Fair Trade Certified logo that features a stick figure man silhouette holding up a basket.

Shade Grown Coffee

This is such an important one to support because it helps to ensure that rainforests aren’t being destroyed to make fields to grow the beans. By not having rainforests and natural environments destroyed for coffee fields, it also ensures that the natural wildlife continues to have a home to live in. Many animals are shoved out of their homes and experience endangerment because of urbanization. Shade grown coffee also does not require chemical fertilizers and because being grown in the shade takes a little bit longer to grown, it actually makes the coffee bean taste better! It’s a win-win to switch! Click here to learn more about shade grown coffee and which brands you can shop!

Save money, save water, save clothes, and save plastic by switching to Dropps Laundry Detergent. This simple switch will help you be more eco-friendly in your everyday life! This picture shows the different sized boxes available for purchase!

Laundry Detergent – Dropps

We are all very aware of how bulky laundry detergent jugs are, and the plastic is so thick! Which is why it’s so upsetting that these are one of the must unrecycled products in our lives! Now you can just as easily start recycling your current jugs (which you definitely should), or you can switch to a product that doesn’t use single-use plastic. Try switching to Dropps! Literally everything about their process is eco-friendly and supports a sustainable laundry life. Click here to check Dropps out online!

Reusable Snack Bags

One family will go through around 500 plastic snack bags per years and, yes, they probably won’t be recycled. Now THAT’S a lot of plastic going into landfills. Buying reusable snack bags will not only limit your plastic use, but it will be cheaper for you long-term not having to continually buy more and more plastic bags! Reusable snack baggies can be found pretty much anywhere – Walmart, Kohl’s, Target, etc. I personally found that the ones at Target had some of the best prints, sizes, and styles. Click here to shop reusable snack bags from Target!

If you only think you can have fun in las Vegas during the summer, then you are wrong! Here's what you can do right now to have fun in Vegas during the off season!

A COVID Guide to Vegas During the Off-Season

Vegas! A place of fun, excitement, parties, and lots of drinks! Well, if you have ever visited Las Vegas during the off-season (i.e. during the winter months) there isn’t as much excitement. Now add on COVID regulations and there is probably a little less to do than normal. But I am going to give you a practical guide to going to Las Vegas during a COVID, off-season vacation!

First of all, let me preface this by saying that this guide will not be for everyone – I completely understand that everyone has their own comfort level with traveling or even just going out for a night so what me and my group did for our four day trip might not be your cup of tea. And that’s ok!

Moving along, my friends and I went to Las Vegas from February 1st to the 4th to celebrate a late birthday for me and an early birthday for one of the friends I was going with. But we actually got so excited to take our five hour drive from San Diego to Vegas to we ended up leaving San Diego around 8pm on January 31st and arrived at 2am in Vegas! Because that part was kind of a last minute plan, we bought a very cheap room at the Excalibur – with room fees and taxes it came out to around $38. We spent the first official night and the second night at New York New York, and our final night was spent at the Bellagio.

Now I know what you are thinking – that’s a lot of jumping around for a short trip and it must have cost you a grip to do that. Well here’s a secret – our rooms at New York New York and the Bellagio were FREE!!! I mean, minus the room fees and taxes. Those rooms were comped, but all comped rooms are still subject to the fees and taxes. How did we get free rooms? Check out my other blog that dives in to all the ways we saved in Vegas and got countless opportunities for free rooms, discounted experiences, free drinks, and many more rewards! What’s even better is that to obtain there rewards is 100% free!! You don’t have to spend something to get these rewards, you don’t have to open a fancy credit card – nope none of that. So check out that blog HERE!

So you need some ideas? Here are my favorites!

Hotel hop! If you plan on staying for a few days, maybe try staying at a different hotel each night just for the change of scenery. You can experience a different hotel room and a different view of the Strip!

Casino explore! Now even if you don’t hotel hop, that doesn’t mean you can’t check out all there is to offer at those different hotels. I mean the casinos are where all the action and shopping is! But remember to check what is open because some hotels/casinos during COVID times are shut down for half of the week. Our favorites were wandering around Caesar’s (it’s HUGE) and getting lost at in the shopping center at the Venetian. Both places are beautifully themed, as are most of the hotels on the Strip!

Find some cool bars! We found a few like the 1923 Prohibition Bar at Mandalay Bay, the SkyBar at the Waldorf Astoria, and the Vanderpump at Caesar’s. But remember to CALL AHEAD! Many bars either have different operating hours than what is listed on Google (they might even be closed even though Google says they are open and we ran into this problem for a few bars we wanted to check out) OR they require reservations. Either way, just call ahead to see what’s up so you aren’t left without plans.

Check out the cute Flamingos at the Flamingo Hotel, the Shark Reef at the Mandalay Bay, or the mini zoo at Mirage! Since my friends and I all work at a zoo, looking at cute animals is always a must. However, the Shark Reef is a ticketed entry and I honestly don’t think it’s worth paying the $25 to see it. So if you want to go, get a comped ticket through the myVEGAS apps. Also, when we went, the Mirage wasn’t open during the week due to low guest activity, so again, just remember to look up what their operating hours are.

Download the myVEGAS apps and let the free rewards lead you around to new locations! There are so many rewards and it really let’s you get creative in how you explore this awesome place. Most of our plans were lead by these free rewards. We were able to get a lot of Loyalty Points very easily so we were all able to participate in these free activities together!

Whatever you decide to do, do it safely! More things will start to open up in no time!
